Course Developments

Green KeepersOver the past few years, we have, under the guidance of our Head Greenkeeper Mr. Andrew O’Hara, carried out with member’s approval a series of planned projects that has further enhanced the quality and spine of the course.
Initially we installed a very successful innovative drainage system which has allowed us to return for most of the year to true links conditions.

This was followed by our “Design to Counteract Technology Programme” consisting of works to tees, bunkers, gorse planting and dune maintenance.

These works, supported by funding from the Royal & Ancient Golf Club, resulted in the Scottish Golf Union re-rating this par 71 course with an SSS of 72 against the previous figure of 70.

We annually invest in machinery to assist with the preparation and maintenance of the course and have been rewarded, in the opinion of our STRI agronomist, with constantly producing as good playing surfaces as you will find.

Green KeepersWe are currently in discussion with the local authority over the possibility of including in our lease, ground adjacent to the golf course with a view to providing pitch and putt practice holes, a short game area and a practice ground to compliment our current facilities.

Putting greens with surfaces and qualities as close as possible to those on the course as are also being considered.

At the end of August we had a visit on behalf of the R & A’s Championship Committee from STRI’s turfgrass agronomist to review the annual condition of the course and confirm maintenance operations.

The overall conclusion is that Leven Links “are in terrific order” with the greens in the top echelon of those seen in Scotland this year.

A maintenance programme has been identified, which the Head Greenkeeper and his team will be implementing along with other works over the next few months.

Over the past few years we have made great strides in improving the structure of the course and are currently hatching some embryonic ideas which we hope will excite the golfing community as well as keeping us to the forefront of quality links courses.
